South Africa is the number one destination for Jazz Music lovers in Africa. People troop into the country at different times of the year to experience Jazz music and witness the various festivals on offer. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival and Joy of Jazz are two of the prominent to attend in Cape Town and Johannesburg, respectively.
Now in the 19th year, the Joy of Jazz, which began in Pretoria, is the biggest jazz festival in the north and the oldest in South Africa, thanks to a stellar line-up of musicians from South Africa and around the globe. The highly anticipated event is proudly sponsored by Standard Bank and features performances from artists on four stages over a three day period.
Various musical styles will be on show; however, a strong emphasis is placed on jazz music. The festival showcases both established and developing artists and provides a platform for up-and-comers. This year’s exciting line-up includes a mix of top artists and home-grown talents.
Some of the big names include the Renowned American musician Bob James, Gerald Albright, South Africa’s Jonathan Butler, Bill Champlin, Award winning vocalist – Deniece Williams, Brenda Russell and drummer – Paul Peress. The line-up also includes the likes of Barney Rachabane, Sibongile Khumalo, Alune Wade, flautist – Wouter Kellerman; Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse and Ringo.
One of the highlights of the 2015 edition was the historic collaboration between Hugh Masekela and Oliver Mtukudzi. If you’re a lover of smooth jazz and sultry blues, the 2016 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival will take place at the usual spot, the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg from September 15th – 17th, 2016.
Commenting on the announcement of the 2016 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival artiste line-up, Event executive producer Peter Tladi of T-Musicman said;
“As festival promoters we spend a great deal of time searching for artists who will appeal to a broad base of music fans. We want to present a diverse range of jazz styles inclusive of the giants of jazz and the upcoming young lions. There is something for everyone with this year’s line-up which is truly international and inspirational.”
